Frequently asked questions
Also called a ‘medical food’ for short, medical foods supplement the diet for people who are limited or impaired to take, digest, absorb, metabolise, excrete, or have certain conditions or illnesses that inhibit them to adequately intake certain food or nutrients in food.
All other medical foods on the market are for people with certain illnesses, diseases, or metabolic issues, etc. APOC has identified that individuals may be limited or impaired to intake certain foods (and the valuable phytocompound nutrients in those foods) based on non-health related issues. These non-health related issues are known as the social determinants of health. Social determinants of health include issues such as accessibility, disability, culture, age, gender, socioeconomic status, and location.
Our medical foods are designed to solve problems caused by the social determinants of health. This creates a different level of responsibility for stores providing our medical foods to the public. A different level of health assessment is required to provide someone with a supplement who has chronic kidney failure rather than to someone who doesn’t have access to spinach or quinoa. Our stores understand this and do not give health advice for the dietary support of illness and disease.
Our included ‘syringe’ is not actually a syringe. It is a measuring device for spill-less ease instead of pouring serves into a cup. As we are an NDIS Registered Provider we have to cater to those with limitations. The spill-less utensil ‘syringe’ was designed to accommodate for those customers such as an NDIS participant we otherwise would discriminate against.
A cyclodextrin complex is a food delivery system technology. Cyclodextrin complexes improve nutrient digestion throughout the gut leading to enhanced nutrient absorption and greater metabolism.
Phytasorb® is our registered cyclodextrin complex. CAN-ABsorb® is our registered lipid delivery system, to improve nutrient digestion throughout the gut leading to enhanced nutrient absorption and greater metabolism.
APOC’s Medical Foods are designed explicitly for the public to supplement nutrition in those who don’t have access to adequate intake. As such, we do not have any public recommendations for exceeding the recommended serve. However, if your health or medical practitioner prescribes a higher than the maximum displayed recommended serve, you may follow the advice provided by your practitioner.
